Aftercare

Tattoo Aftercare Instructions

Your tattoo artist has carefully applied a bandage to protect your new tattoo. Keep this wrap on for 4 to 7 days. During this time, you may notice a brownish fluid inside the bandage—this is a mix of plasma and ink. Don’t worry! This is completely normal and actually helps support the healing process.

After You Remove the Bandage

When it’s time to take the wrap off (after 4–7 days), gently wash your tattoo using warm water and antibacterial soap. Do not scrub. Lightly clean the area and pat it dry with a clean towel.

As your tattoo begins to heal, it may feel dry and start to flake like a sunburn. You might also see some light scabbing—this is normal. Do not pick or scratch at any scabs. Let them fall off naturally.

Once dry, apply a non-scented lotion 2–3 times a day or as needed to relieve dryness and itching.

Things to Avoid During Healing

  • Sun exposure: Avoid direct sunlight for 2–3 weeks or until fully healed. Once healed, always apply sunscreen to protect your tattoo.

  • Scratching or picking: If your tattoo itches, apply lotion—never scratch or peel, as this can cause ink loss.

  • Soaking: No swimming (pools, lakes, ponds, beaches) for at least 2 weeks. Showers are fine, but avoid soaking the tattoo.

  • Scented lotions: Avoid scented products, as they may irritate healing skin.

  • Heavy exercise: Avoid intense workouts for the first 48 hours.

  • Shaving: Do not shave over the tattoo until it is completely healed.

  • Petroleum-based products: Avoid Vaseline, A&D ointment, Neosporin, and any petroleum-based creams.

If You Need to Remove the Bandage Early

If you experience irritation or excessive redness around the bandage, you may be reacting to the adhesive. If so:

  • Carefully remove the bandage.

  • Wash the area with antibacterial soap and warm water.

  • The redness should subside in a few days, though in rare cases it may take longer.

  • If the bandage lifts or leaks, remove it and begin regular aftercare.

  • Do not rewrap the tattoo.

  • Start applying unscented lotion 2–3 times a day.

Quick Tips for Better Healing

  • Stay hydrated—drinking plenty of water helps your skin heal faster.

  • Listen to your body—if something feels wrong or you’re unsure, don’t hesitate to reach out to your artist or a medical professional.
